Trump Threatens Ukraine: An Expert Explains How Kyiv Can Save the Day
Trump has decided to put pressure on Ukraine rather than on Russia. This has already led to some unclear issues with intelligence sharing and restrictions on Starlink operations. It is important for Ukraine to take several steps at the official level right now.
Viktor Shlinchak, chairman of the board of the Institute of World Policy, spoke about this on Channel 24. According to him, it became clear almost immediately that Trump’s energy agreement wasn’t working at all. He announced it, but Russia isn’t adhering to it at all – without facing any consequences.
What should Ukraine do next?
As Shlinchak emphasized, there was initially talk that Ukraine should stop striking oil refineries, and Russia would make certain concessions in response. Instead, the Kremlin has only intensified its attacks on Kyiv. And it is extremely surprising that Trump has not reacted to this in any way.
Putin senses the White House’s electoral weakness and understands that Trump is simply unable to put pressure on Russia – or is unwilling to do so,
– Shlinchak noted.
Trump doesn’t care how the fighting in Ukraine ends. What matters to him is achieving at least some kind of result at any cost. Then he’ll tell Congress how he ended yet another war.
How Ukraine should continue to interact with the U.S.: watch the video on Channel 24
It is important for Ukraine to take control of the situation. It needs to step up its efforts at the official level. Specifically, this involves the Verkhovna Rada addressing Congress regarding that very intelligence data. This cooperation is largely based on documents adopted by Congress.
Such a decision by the White House may indicate that Trump is violating more than one law. There is also a signed security agreement between Ukraine and the U.S. There are Pentagon decisions that remain in effect. Ukraine needs to make official appeals so that Congress has the opportunity to elevate this issue to a higher level. It is also important to clarify with European partners whether they can replace intelligence data from the U.S.,
– said Shlinchak.
We should add that Trump may find himself in a bit of a bind very soon. It all depends on what the results of the midterm congressional elections will be. They will take place on November 3.
