The US May Approve New Aid for Ukraine After the Elections, According to Reuters
A Democratic Party victory in the U.S. midterm elections in November 2026 could pave the way for a new aid package for Ukraine. They will be able to influence the congressional agenda and bring relevant bills to a vote.
Reuters reports this.
How will a Democratic victory affect Trump’s decisions?
The U.S. midterm elections will take place in November 2026. If the Democrats gain control of the House of Representatives, they will be able to set the House’s agenda and decide which bills to bring to a vote.
A new aid package for Ukraine could receive bipartisan support sufficient to override a presidential veto. This would require at least two-thirds of the votes in each chamber of Congress, provided that constitutional procedures are followed.
At the same time, Democrats may try to limit other foreign policy decisions by Trump. In particular, Congressman Gregory Meeks of New York, who could head the House Foreign Affairs Committee if Democrats take control of the House, has introduced a bipartisan bill aimed at blocking the president’s plan to return Russian diesel fuel to the global market.
As a reminder, in an exclusive interview with 24 Channel, Uriel Epstein, executive director of the Renew Democracy Initiative, said that control of Congress would allow Democrats step up oversight of the Trump administration to conduct investigations and influence budget decisions.
One possible step is to advance bills that would not only grant the president the authority to impose sanctions against Russia but would also require him to do so. Epstein also emphasized the need to legally restrict the purchase of Russian oil and diesel fuel.
At the same time, to advance such initiatives, Democrats will have to secure the support of Republicans who are willing to oppose Trump’s policies. If, however, Democrats control only the House of Representatives, their ability to influence the president’s foreign policy will be more limited.
