Boris Pistorius – Germany's Minister of Defense since January 19, 2023, a member of the Social Democratic Party. On May 5, 2025, he retained his post in the new government of Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
The 65-year-old official is known as one of the biggest supporters of military aid to Ukraine. However, unlike German Chancellor Merz, he has doubts about transferring Taurus missiles to Ukraine.
At the same time, at the end of April 2025, Boris Pistorius urged Ukraine not to agree to Donald Trump's peace proposal. The German Defense Minister stated that US recognition of Crimea as part of Russia, Moscow retaining control over the rest of the occupied territories, a ban on Ukraine joining NATO and the lifting of sanctions against Russia amount to Ukraine's de facto capitulation.
Boris Pistorius demands increasing Germany's defense budget to more than 60 billion euros from 2025. The minister is convinced that:
- Europe's security – is a resilient Ukraine;
- Europeans bear greater responsibility for Europe's security than ever before, regardless of the decisions of the new US administration.
