Russia's War Against Ukraine
- 1 October

On February 24, 2022, Russia attacked Ukraine. Due to the full-scale invasion by the aggressor country, martial law and general mobilisation were introduced in Ukraine. Russian President Vladimir Putin cynically stated that he was sending troops supposedly to protect the population, and also put forward an insane demand – that the Armed Forces of Ukraine lay down their arms.
In February and March 2022, Ukrainian-Russian negotiations took place. First, the parties met on the border with Belarus, later in Istanbul. At that time, Russia demanded from Ukraine neutrality, renunciation of NATO membership, a ban on receiving foreign weapons or foreign military personnel, and limits on the Armed Forces of Ukraine in terms of troops and equipment. Kyiv did not accept these capitulation demands and continued the fight.
Russia's war against Ukraine has been going on for 3 years now. During the first year of the horrific invasion, Ukraine:
- in March 2022, managed to drive the Russians out of the Kyiv region;
- did not allow the occupiers to capture Kharkiv, Sumy, Chernihiv, Odesa and Mykolaiv;
- on April 13, 2022, the Armed Forces of Ukraine destroyed the Russian cruiser "Moskva", worth approximately 750 million dollars;
- on July 4, 2022, liberated Snake Island.
Ukrainian troops began liberating our lands after victories at sea and after the Russians fled the North and were stopped in the South.
Importantly, on October 8, 2022, the SBU blew up the Crimean Bridge. Already on November 11, 2022, Ukraine liberated Kherson. On July 17, 2023, Ukrainian security forces blew up the Crimean Bridge for the second time.
The Ukrainian counteroffensive of 2023 did not bring the expected results for various reasons. Despite this, as of August 2024, Ukraine had managed to destroy or damage 28 ships of the Russian Black Sea Fleet. Ukrainian-made Sea Baby naval drones, which struck both Russian ships and the Crimean Bridge, played no small role in Ukraine's successes.
In October 2023, then US President Joe Biden requested from Congress a military aid package for Israel and Ukraine worth 106 billion dollars. More than 60 billion was to be allocated to Ukraine. However, the "pro-Trump wing" of Congress and Speaker of the House of Representatives Mike Johnson criticised the document. Only in April 2024 did Congress approve aid to Ukraine.
Currently, the Ukrainian military has been standing firm for the third year of the war. During this time, enemy losses amount to more than 963,000 troops, more than 370 aircraft, more than 10,000 tanks and a lot of other equipment. Russian troops continue to try to press in the East of Ukraine.
In January 2025, Donald Trump, who promised to end the war in 24 hours, became President of the USA. Negotiations are currently under way, but it is not known for certain when the war in Ukraine will end.
