Peter Navarro – Senior Counselor for Trade and Manufacturing to US President Donald Trump.
He studied at Tufts University, served in the Peace Corps in Thailand and continued his education at the Kennedy School of Government and at Harvard.
The economist worked as a research fellow at the Harvard Center for Energy and Environmental Policy and taught at the business school of the University of California, Irvine. He is the author of the books "The Coming China Wars", "Death by China" and others.
Peter Navarro is known for his radical views on trade. He is a supporter of protectionism, high tariffs and bringing manufacturing back to the US.
The official became an economic adviser to Donald Trump's campaign in 2016; in 2017 – in the Trump administration he took the post of Director of the National Trade Council, and later – head of the Office of Trade and Manufacturing Policy.
After the 2020 US presidential election, he tried to challenge its results. The House Select Committee investigating the January 6, 2021, unrest in the US sent him a subpoena for documents and testimony. Navarro ignored it, so in September 2021 he was convicted on two counts of contempt of Congress. He served a 4-month prison sentence.
In January 2025, Peter Navarro became the White House Senior Counselor for Trade and Manufacturing.
According to media reports, it is Navarro who insists on a tough course on tariffs. In particular, he is considered the initiator and "culprit" of the trade war between the US and the world.
