Kursk Oblast
In August 2024, the Armed Forces of Ukraine launched an offensive operation in Russia's Kursk region. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that this operation is aimed at creating a "security zone" to protect Ukrainian border territories and forcing Russia into fair negotiations to end the war.
Ukrainian troops took control of 92 settlements and about 1,250 square kilometers of territory in the Kursk region.
In 2025, Russia stepped up efforts to regain the territories in the Kursk region that had been taken by the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Russian troops are advancing to encircle Ukrainian units, in particular in the area of the town of Sudzha.
