Europe is debating who should represent the continent in negotiations with Russia. The Kremlin has stated that it will support the candidate provided they demonstrate a "sincere desire" for peace.

In a comment to propagandists, Putin’s spokesperson Dmitry Peskov noted that Europe has long wanted to select a negotiator for dialogue with Russia, but has not yet done so.

What did Peskov say about Europe’s search for a negotiator?

“The EU has long wanted to nominate a negotiator, but whether it is unable to do so or simply doesn’t dare, this is not constructive,”the Russian official remarked.

Peskov accused the EU of merely talking about negotiators so far, but failing to take action.

According to Putin’s spokesperson, Russia would welcome the appointment of a European negotiator, especially if that person were committed to achieving peace.

If there is a negotiator, that’s good. If it’s a negotiator who sincerely seeks to promote a peaceful settlement, that would be even betterPeskov said.

Who in Europe do they want to send to potential negotiations with Russia?

Europe is considering five leaders for the role of “ negotiators with Russia” to end the war in Ukraine. Among the potential candidates are Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Finnish President Alexander Stubb, Czech President Petr Pavel, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, and Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre.

Previous attempts to select a single representative for all of Europe have been unsuccessful. Therefore, diplomats are proposing to involve several leaders in the negotiations to avoid disputes between countries.

Among the possible candidates, Alexander Stubb, who maintains close ties with U.S. President Donald Trump, is singled out in particular.
