Valery Zaluzhny

Valery Zaluzhny is the former Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. He led the army from July 27, 2021, including during the full-scale war. Zaluzhny was dismissed on February 8, 2024.
He comes from the Zhytomyr region, is married and has two daughters. He received the rank of general in March 2022. He is the first Commander-in-Chief who has combat experience and was not brought up by the Soviet military system. During his time in office, Zaluzhny took many important steps towards de-bureaucratising the army.
