U.S. Concerns

The diplomat noted that both sides of the conflict are currently presenting “radically different versions” of what happened around the courthouse.

"We are witnessing an unprecedented confrontation between the government’s exercise of state power, on the one hand, and the independence and authority of a constitutional body, on the other,"Tom Rose emphasized.

The ambassador stressed that the presence of numerous protesters near the courthouse “makes an already dangerous situation even more volatile.” According to him, further confrontation could create risks that might lead to far worse consequences for the state.

It is not within our authority to judge or interfere in Poland’s internal affairs. We are concerned about the stability, security, and democratic future of a country that we proudly call our friend and allyRose noted.

He also expressed hope that government officials, law enforcement, and protesters would “keep a cool head” and avoid actions that could provoke violence.

Protests outside the courthouse and mutual accusations

The crisis escalated after information regarding the removal of the court presidentof Bohdan Svetchkovsky and his deputy, Bartolomej Sokhansky, appeared on the Constitutional Tribunal’s website on October 30. At the same time, the court’s official account on social media platform X reported that the website had been hijacked and that the head of the institution was continuing his work.

On the night of October 31, an opposition protest gathered near the institution, and participants broke down the gates in an attempt to enter the building. Among those present at the rally was Jarosław Kaczyński, leader of the Law and Justice party.
