An attempt to ship Russian diesel fuel to the U.S. sparked a major political scandal in Washington. Violating sanctions could cause Trump further problems in Congress.

Oleg Pendzin, executive director of the Economic Discussion Club, spoke about this on 24 Channel. According to him, U.S. refineries produce 19.5 million metric tons of diesel fuel each month, while domestic consumption stands at 14.5–15 million metric tons. Consequently, the three tankers carrying 140,000 metric tons of diesel that are already en route to the U.S. will have absolutely no impact on prices. These are simply negligible volumes. However, the agreement with Russia itself will still work against Trump.

Despite the small volume, this agreement directly violates the 2022 federal law signed by Joe Biden, which prohibits any imports of energy resources from Russia.

A bipartisan group of congressmen has already sent a warning to ports and banks regarding the inadmissibility of destroying documents related to this agreement, as a temporary investigative commission will be established after the election.

In addition to the diesel scandal, lawmakers are preparing to bring other corruption cases involving Trump’s inner circle to light. These include agreements regarding the sale of Lukoil assets, profits from cryptocurrency, the sale of presidential pardons, and paid access to the head of the White House. Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth will also come under investigation for his unprofessional conduct.

If the Democrats secure a majority in the Senate, the two and a half years Trump has left in office will turn into a series of appearances before temporary investigative committees– the economist noted.

Meanwhile, Trump’s approval rating has already fallen to a critical 32–33%. And diesel prices for Americans have risen on average from $3.30 in January to $6.50–$6.70 per gallon.

Incidentally, tankers carrying Russian diesel fuel had previously already set out for U.S. ports. One of them is subject to sanctions imposed by the United Kingdom, the EU, and Canada.
