Avdiivka

Avdiivka is a city located 13 kilometers from Donetsk. Before the fighting in Donbas began, 35,000 people lived in the city.

The city is home to the Avdiivka Coke Plant – the largest plant of its kind in Europe. The Avdiivka coke plant produces a quarter of all coking coal for Ukraine's industry and energy sector.

During the ATO, the city became one of the militants' targets. Avdiivka is periodically left without electricity, water and heating due to shelling by Russian-terrorist forces.

As of early 2017, Avdiivka is the closest point to Donetsk controlled by the Ukrainian military.
