Catalonia

The Catalan independence referendum took place on October 1. On September 7, the local parliament by a majority vote supported a law on holding the referendum, which put the following question: "Do you want Catalonia to be an independent state in the form of a republic?". The decision of the regional parliament provides not only for a vote, but also for the creation of a new legal framework for building a state independent of Spain. This means creating practically all state bodies separately from Spain.

Official Madrid immediately declared that such a decision of the Catalan parliament – was a violation of the Constitution, and the Constitutional Court of Spain suspended the law.

The Constitutional Court of Spain imposed daily fines of enormous amounts on Catalonia's top officials for each day of organising the so-called independence referendum.

In the October 1 referendum, the overwhelming majority of those who took part voted for Catalonia's independence. Madrid declared the referendum illegal and tried to stop it with the help of the police. The European Union also recognised the referendum in Catalonia as illegal.

Despite this, on October 27 the Catalan parliament voted for a resolution declaring independence from Spain.
