Elections in Romania

The first round of the presidential election in Romania took place on May 4, 2025. According to official results, the leader (40.96% of the vote) was George Simion – a far-right politician from the AUR party. He is persona non grata in Ukraine and is known for promising to bring to power the pro-Russian candidate Călin Georgescu, who was banned from running in the election.

Second place in the first round of the presidential election went to Bucharest Mayor Nicușor Dan, who received 20.99% of the vote. He is a pro-European and pro-NATO politician who ran as an independent candidate and advocates supporting Ukraine in the war against Russia.

The second round of the election in Romania took place on May 18, 2025. In it, George Simion and Nicușor Dan competed for the post of President of Romania. The winner was Nicușor Dan.

It is worth noting that a presidential election in Romania was held on November 24, 2024. At that time, the pro-Russian candidate Călin Georgescu won the first round. However, on December 6, 2024, the Constitutional Court of Romania annulled the election results because Russia had conducted a large-scale social media campaign, especially on TikTok, to promote the politician.

Later, Călin Georgescu was detained on charges of involvement in creating a "fascist organization" and making false statements regarding the financing of his election campaign.
