Lent

Great Lent is the fast that precedes Easter.

This fast is called Great because it lasts 40 days and symbolizes the 7-week fast of Jesus Christ in the desert before his preaching.

It was at the end of this fast, on Good Friday, that Jesus Christ was crucified on Mount Golgotha. Jesus was buried in a rock tomb, where he rose on the third day.

So on Sunday believers celebrate the Resurrection of the Lord – Easter – and greet each other with "Christ is Risen", answering "Truly He is Risen".

Traditionally, for the holiday people bake paska and dye eggs.
