Military Coup in Myanmar
On the morning of February 1, 2021, the military seized power in Myanmar. They detained the country's leader Aung San Suu Kyi, who held the post of "State Counsellor" and de facto headed the government, as well as President Win Myint and other senior figures of the ruling National League for Democracy.
A few hours after the detention, the army-controlled Myawaddy channel announced a one-year state of emergency to preserve "stability" amid disputes over the elections.
The statement also said that former general Myint Swe, who was the first vice president, had become the new acting president. Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, commander-in-chief of the armed forces, received control over "legislation, administration and the judiciary".
