The Arrest of Paul Vilán in Russia
On December 28, the Russian Federal Security Service announced the detention in Moscow of US citizen Paul Whelan. A criminal case was opened against him under the article on espionage. The court ordered Whelan to be held in custody until February 28. The American denies the charges, and his lawyer has appealed the preventive measure. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo called on Russia to immediately return the man to his homeland.
