The Conflict Between Armenia and Azerbaijan
The conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh lasted several decades. The region, with a large Armenian population, was part of the Azerbaijan SSR. In the late 1980s, pro-Armenian forces backed by Yerevan took control of Nagorno-Karabakh.
The situation escalated again on September 27, 2020. The Azerbaijani Defense Ministry stated that Armenian troops had shelled the positions of the Azerbaijani army located in the front-line zone, as well as several settlements, with large-caliber guns, mortars and artillery systems. In response, Armenia declared martial law and mobilization. Azerbaijan threatened an offensive.
The fighting between Armenia and Azerbaijan lasted approximately 6 weeks. Baku stated that during this time it had regained a significant part of the lands in Nagorno-Karabakh.
In November 2020, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Russia signed an agreement to end the war in the region. Under the agreements, Armenia withdrew from Nagorno-Karabakh.
