The Heroes of Kruty
The memory of the fallen students is honored annually on January 29.The battle that took place near the Kruty railway station in 1918 lasted only 5 hours.
The battle was unequal: a small group of soldiers, numbering about 300 people, managed to resist the 5,000-strong army of Soviet Russia and hold it back for two days. 28 young men were taken prisoner and later shot.
Already in March 1918, after the Bolsheviks signed the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk and the government of the UNR returned to Kyiv, the Central Rada decided to solemnly rebury the fallen students at Askold's Grave in Kyiv.
The Day of Remembrance of the Heroes of Kruty began to be officially observed after President of Ukraine Viktor Yushchenko signed the Decree "On Honoring the Memory of the Heroes of Kruty" on January 29, 2007.
