The Murder of Georgiy Gongadze

Those who ordered the murder have still not been identified. Journalist Georgiy Gongadze disappeared on September 16, 2000. A beheaded body was found in a forest near Tarashcha in Kyiv region in November of the same year.

According to the experts' conclusions, it could have belonged to Georgiy. In 2009, the remains of a skull were found in Kyiv region, which, according to the Prosecutor General's Office, belong to Gongadze. The funeral of the murdered journalist took place on March 22, 2016 in Kyiv.

On March 15, 2008, the Kyiv Court of Appeal found three former employees of the External Surveillance Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine guilty of Gongadze's murder – Valerii Kostenko, Mykola Protasov and Oleksandr Popovych.

The court sentenced them to prison terms of 12 to 13 years. On January 6, 2017, the Kyiv Court of Appeal upheld the life sentence handed down to Oleksiy Pukach on January 9, 2013 for the murder of the journalist.
