UIA Plane Crash in Iran
On the morning of January 8, a plane of the Ukrainian airline UIA crashed in Iran. It went down shortly after taking off from the airport in Tehran. There were 176 people on board: 167 passengers and 9 crew members. All of them died.
Among the dead are 11 Ukrainians – 9 crew members and 2 passengers. Most of the other victims are citizens of Iran.
The first version of the crash, supported by the Iranian authorities, was engine failure. UIA immediately expressed doubts about this cause of the disaster. The Boeing 737 aircraft was fairly new – manufactured in 2016, and it had undergone its last maintenance just before – on January 6, 2020.
In fact, the plane crashed after being hit by Iranian air defense missiles. This was confirmed by the country's authorities three days after the disaster – on January 11. Because Iran shot down a passenger plane and concealed this information for a long time, mass protests broke out in the country.
