On January 3, people in Kazakhstan took to the streets to protest against an increase in gas prices. Later, clashes began between activists and security forces.After that, the price of liquefied gas was reduced, and President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev agreed to the government's resignation. However, the protests flared up with renewed vigour on January 5 – armoured personnel carriers were brought onto the streets of Almaty, protesters burned law enforcement vehicles, and the sounds of stun grenade explosions were heard.
