The word appeared after the events at Donetsk airport. It was used to describe the soldiers who desperately defended the airfield.
The nickname quickly became popular – it was used both by Ukrainian media and by Ukrainians on social networks to refer to the heroic defenders of Donetsk Airport.
The dictionary of modern Ukrainian language and slang "Myslovo" named "cyborgs" the word of 2014; it was practically the only one among the most important words of that year with a positive meaning.
