
Gennady Kernes Has Died
Kharkiv Mayor Gennady Kernes died on the night of December 17 from complications of COVID-19. He was being treated at the Charité hospital in Germany.Kernes was last seen in public on August 23. Because of the coronavirus and bilateral pneumonia, his chronic illnesses and old injuries worsened. In December, Kernes's condition deteriorated significantly: his kidneys failed.Gennady Kernes was re-elected mayor of Kharkiv in the 2020 local elections and was recognized as mayor despite his absence from the city council session.
