Lifting of Immunity
The Verkhovna Rada of the 9th convocation approved a draft law amending the Constitution of Ukraine, which proposed stripping people's deputies of immunity.
On the night of August 30, 2019, 363 people's deputies voted for the draft law in the first reading, 1 abstained, 0 against.
If these changes are approved, from January 1, 2020, all deputies will become "touchable", but opportunities for political persecution for parliamentary activity will be reduced to a minimum. The adopted document provides that deputies cannot be jailed for their statements, but only for criminal activity. Now people's deputies will not bear legal liability for voting results or statements in parliament, except for liability for insult or defamation.
