On April 19, 2018, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine approved a resolution on President Petro Poroshenko's appeal to Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew regarding the autocephaly of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.
On December 15, during the Unification Council, Orthodox bishops announced the unification of Ukrainian churches into a Single Local Independent Church. Its official name is the Orthodox Church of Ukraine.
The Primate of the Single Local Orthodox Church became Metropolitan Epiphanius of Pereiaslav and Bila Tserkva. His candidacy was supported by the majority of bishops at the Unification Council in Kyiv. The cathedral of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine will be St. Michael's Golden-Domed Cathedral.Editors' choice
