State Bureau of Investigations
A law enforcement agency of Ukraine responsible for investigating cases involving law enforcement officers, judges and top-level officials. The agency began operating on November 27, 2018.
In February 2019, the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine stated that in the 5 years since the Maidan protests only limited progress had been made in the SBI's investigation of the killings and violent deaths of 98 people.
On November 5, the SBI announced that the investigation of crimes committed during the Maidan would be temporarily suspended. This was due to the excessive workload of the Bureau and a shortage of investigators.
On December 3, the Verkhovna Rada voted for bill No. 2116 amending the law on the State Bureau of Investigation. The amendments will allow the investigation of the Maidan cases to continue. In addition, the law provides for a relaunch of the State Bureau of Investigation and the dismissal of the agency's entire leadership.
