The Arrest of Avakov's Son
On October 31, NABU detectives detained three people in a case concerning the Ministry of Internal Affairs' purchase of 6,000 tactical backpacks at inflated prices. Among those detained – were the son of the Minister of Internal Affairs Oleksandr Avakov, Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs Serhii Chebotar and a representative of the company that won the tender for the supply of the backpacks. They are suspected of embezzling 14 million hryvnias from the state budget.
According to NABU, in early 2015 the backpacks were not only purchased at prices significantly higher than the average market price, but the goods were also not delivered on time. In addition, they did not meet the requirements set by the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine.
The investigation has a video recording of a conversation between Avakov's son and Serhii Chebotar about the purchase of these backpacks.
