The Conflict Between Serbia and Kosovo
Another escalation between Serbia and Kosovo flared up on July 31. Sirens and the sound of gunfire were heard in the border areas. Due to the unrest, the Kosovo police announced the closure of the border crossings with Serbia. Before that, Pristina announced that from August 1 it would begin implementing a decision on the re-registration of vehicles and identity cards. This is all because ethnic Serbs living in northern Kosovo use Serbian currency and have Serbian citizenship.Previously, for 5 years, there had been an agreement between Serbia and Kosovo that provided for the latter to use neutral documents and licence plates. The transition period ended long ago, and this time Kosovo is determined to finish what it started. Because of this, the local Serbs took to protests.Serbia does not recognise Kosovo's independence or its documents and is actively involved in the conflict, supporting the Kosovo Serbs. Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić does not rule out the possibility of a military solution.
