The Scandal Over Hungarian Passports

In September 2018, it became known that Hungarian passports were being issued to Ukrainians in Zakarpattia. In particular, a video appeared showing local residents at the Hungarian consulate in Berehove receiving citizenship of the neighboring state and swearing allegiance to it.This caused a loud diplomatic scandal. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin Pavlo Klimkin stated that the problem of the scandal with the issuance of Hungarian passports in Berehove lies not only in the very fact of issuing the documents, but also in the demands to hide it from the Ukrainian authorities. The Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that this could lead to the expulsion of the Hungarian consul. Budapest threatens similar measures.At the same time, Klimkin assured that Ukraine does not and will not persecute those of its citizens who have received Hungarian passports.
