Martial Law in Ukraine
On February 24, 2022, martial law was introduced throughout Ukraine due to Russia's attack. The aggressor's troops attacked major cities – Kyiv, Kharkiv, Odesa and others – as well as important infrastructure and military facilities. Our Armed Forces of Ukraine are trying to repel the enemy's attacks.Martial law is a special legal regime introduced in Ukraine or in certain areas of it in cases of armed aggression against Ukraine, an attack on it, or if there is a threat to the independence and territorial integrity of the state. The legal basis for introducing martial law is the Constitution of Ukraine, the Law of Ukraine "On the Legal Regime of Martial Law", and a presidential decree.According to the law, the leadership of the state passes to the military command, which, together with executive authorities, military administrations and local self-government bodies, is to introduce and implement the measures of the legal regime. While martial law is in effect, it is prohibited to hold elections, call referendums, hold mass gatherings or go out to protest.During martial law, the military command has the right to impose a curfew, establish a special regime of entry into and exit from settlements, and restrict the freedom of movement of citizens as well as the movement of vehicles.Martial law also provides that the command will be able to control communications companies, broadcasters and publishers in order to carry out explanatory work among the military and the civilian population.
