"PrivatBank"
"PrivatBank" – the largest Ukrainian bank by assets and the leader of Ukraine's retail banking market, registered on March 19, 1992. The initiator of the bank's creation and its first chairman of the board was Ukrainian businessman and politician Serhii Tihipko.
In December 2016, at a special meeting, the Government of Ukraine made an official decision to transfer 100% of the bank's shares to state ownership represented by the Ministry of Finance. At a press conference the next day, NBU Governor Valeria Gontareva said that the bank's main problem was an unbalanced lending policy, in particular an excessive share of lending to related parties. This caused a capital shortfall of UAH 148 billion, of which the bank had accumulated only UAH 32 billion; the shareholders chose not to inject the rest.
On April 17, 2019, the Kyiv District Administrative Court canceled the nationalization of PrivatBank, which the NBU will appeal. On April 19, 2019, the Kyiv District Administrative Court issued another decision in favor of Ihor Kolomoisky in the PrivatBank nationalization case.
On October 15, PrivatBank won in the Court of Appeal of England and Wales in its case against former owners Ihor Kolomoisky and Hennadii Boholiubov. From now on, the English court has jurisdiction to hear PrivatBank's claim concerning fraud committed by the bank's former owners.
