Shelling of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant

Recently, the Russian occupiers entered the territory of Enerhodar, the city where the largest nuclear power plant in Ukraine and Europe, the ZNPP, is located. The townspeople tried to hold back the Russians for as long as possible, but they still reached the Zaporizhzhia NPP.

The shelling of the Zaporizhzhia NPP is a deliberate crime of the occupiers

On March 4, reports appeared of shelling at the Zaporizhzhia NPP – at night the occupiers reached the station and began shelling it. The videos show how the Russian attack on the NPP took place – the seizure was carried out with heavy equipment.

According to Andrii Tuz, a representative of the nuclear power plant's press service, the occupiers deliberately aimed at the power units, which caused a fire. This is a conscious desire to cause a man-made disaster at the Zaporizhzhia station. The press secretary said that there was a real threat of nuclear danger.

On the morning of March 4, news came that the Zaporizhzhia NPP had been captured. The occupiers do not allow employees to ensure the normal operation of the station, nor firefighters to extinguish the fire that they themselves caused. Enerhodar is currently without heating.

Shelling of the NPP is a danger for all of Europe, and for Russia too

The territory is currently occupied by invaders who are ready to cause new fires at the Zaporizhzhia NPP. The news may very soon become grim – the largest nuclear power plant is under threat, and with it all of Europe.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy commented on the seizure and shelling of the Zaporizhzhia NPP. At night, the head of state addressed Europe and NATO in particular, calling for the airspace over Ukraine to be closed urgently. Zelenskyy noted that only one reactor exploded at the Chornobyl NPP, while there are as many as 6 at the Zaporizhzhia NPP, so a huge territory would be affected.

By the way, Russia may also suffer from the nuclear threat – the wind is currently blowing towards Russia, towards the territory of the Krasnodar Krai. So radiation may also affect the aggressor.

The whole world is watching the shelling at the Zaporizhzhia NPP

After Ukraine's appeals to Europe and the world to stop Russia's reckless flirting with nuclear energy, other countries began to react:

  • The IAEA launched a response centre due to the fire at the ZNPP;

  • Foreign media are actively spreading information about a possible nuclear threat;

  • Leaders of countries are discussing with President Zelenskyy the possible consequences of the shelling and options for preventing a disaster.

Currently, the radiation background in the region is normal, but the world is closely monitoring the situation in Enerhodar – the occupiers led by Putin may cause irreparable damage to Ukraine and Europe.
