The Strait of Hormuz is a narrow passage between the Gulf of Oman and the Persian Gulf.
Approximately 20–25% of the world's seaborne oil shipments and one-fifth of the world's liquefied natural gas (LNG) pass through it by ship.
After Israel and the US launched an operation against Iran in February 2026, Tehran closed the Strait of Hormuz. This led to a rise in oil prices.
On March 25, 2026, Iran announced that it had opened the Strait of Hormuz to so-called "non-hostile vessels". Tehran specified that the permission does not extend to Washington and Tel Aviv, or to those who support them during the operation in Iran.
On April 8, 2026, the US and Iran agreed on a two-week ceasefire and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. Only a few vessels managed to pass through the strait. On April 9, Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz and accused the US of violating the ceasefire.
On April 13, 2026, the US announced that it would blockade the Strait of Hormuz, that is, restrict maritime access to Iranian ports. Iran threatens to retaliate against the United States.
On April 17, 2026, Iran opened the Strait of Hormuz to all vessels. But the very next day, Tehran fired on vessels trying to pass through the strait.
As of June 2026, the issue of the Strait of Hormuz has not been resolved or settled due to shelling and disputes between the US, Iran and Israel.
