Panama Canal

The Panama Canal is an artificial waterway connecting the Pacific and Atlantic oceans across the Isthmus of Panama. It was opened in 1914 and significantly shortened the sea route between the western and eastern coasts of America, avoiding the long voyage around South America. The Panama Canal was transferred to Panama's control in 1999.

US President Donald Trump stated in a speech to Congress on March 5, 2025, his intention to return the Panama Canal to US control. He stressed that the canal was built by Americans for Americans and that his administration had already begun the process of regaining control.
