Sumy Oblast

Sumy Oblast is a region in the north-eastern part of Ukraine that borders Russia.

At the beginning of Russia's full-scale war against Ukraine, towns and villages of the oblast were occupied by Russians from February 24 to April 6, 2022. Russia did not capture Sumy , but Konotop and Trostianets were under the invaders' control.

At the end of May 2025, Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Russia was massing troops to create a 10-kilometer-deep "buffer zone" in the Sumy direction.

Before that, on May 22, 2025, Vladimir Putin announced the decision to create it.
