Belarus News

Belarus is now caught between two fires – the dictatorial regime of the unrecognised president Alexander Lukashenko and the pro-Russian oppression of the aggressor Putin, who not only violates Ukraine's sovereignty but is also successfully Russifying the entire Belarusian nation.

News from Belarus – what is known about life in the country

During the regular elections in 2020, from which no surprises were expected – Lukashenko had already ruled for 26 years by then – a large number of opposition figures appeared on whom the people could rely. Among them were Sergei Tikhanovsky and his wife Sviatlana, as well as Viktar Babaryka.

As a result, 2 of the 3 opposition candidates ended up behind the regime's bars – Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya remained free and continued the fight against the dictatorial regime. The news from Belarus was grim – after the rigged election results, in which Lukashenko won 80% of the vote, unrest began in the country.

On August 9, the internet and communications went down in the country. All mobile operators stopped working:

  • "MTS Belarus"

  • "Velcom"

  • "Life" and "DIALLOG"

At the same time, the suppression of protests began – Lukashenko's police arrested more than 3,000 people in just 1 night.

Several weeks of protests led the frightened dictator to call Vladimir Putin, who quickly agreed to "help resolve the problem".

Until November, despite the coronavirus, Belarusians took to rallies – the protests lasted until November 2021. The persecution of so-called opposition "extremists" and the imprisonment of journalists continue to this day – news on state channels portrays protesters as terrorists and criminals.

How two dictators threaten Ukraine

According to satellite images, hundreds of units of military equipment are located on the territory of Belarus near the Ukrainian border. Among them are Russian troops and equipment. Russia and Belarus explained the build-up of militants near Ukraine by supposed exercises – the countries announced that the joint military exercises "Allied Resolve-2022" would take place from February 10, 2022.

While Russian militants attack Ukrainians and try to annex the territory of Donbas to Russia, Lukashenko promises that "the war in Ukraine will last 3–4 days", openly threatening the country.

But despite this pro-Russian tandem, Ukrainian servicemen are holding their positions and not allowing the enemy to advance into Ukraine. Read news from Belarus and about developments on Ukraine's border on Channel 24.
