Patriot, Intelligence, and Starshield: Can Ukraine Fight Without US Assistance?
Ukraine remains dependent on U.S. military technology, even though Europe has already provided $228.5 billion in aid. Analysts have assessed whether the country could wage war without American missiles and intelligence.
CNN analysts note that Europe has already surpassed Washington in terms of the total amount of financial and military support provided to Kyiv. However, European allies are currently unable to fully replace key U.S. defense technologies.
Missile Shortages and Intelligence Challenges
Experts identify the acute shortage of interceptor missiles for Patriot systems as one of the greatest threats to Ukraine’s defense. These systems are among the few capable of effectively shooting down Russian ballistic missiles.
In addition to air defense systems, Ukraine relies heavily on U.S. intelligence and Starshield satellite communications. A suspension of data exchange or restrictions on communication speeds create additional risks for the civilian population and complicate the operation of Ukrainian interceptor drones.
It should be noted that on October 24, Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced the full Restoration of Starlink and Starshield terminalsat the speed that was in effect prior to the imposition of restrictions.
Europe’s Position and Geopolitical Risks
European Union countries have already provided at least $228.5 billion in aid, including the purchase of American weapons. At the same time, such deliveries still require approval from the Pentagon, which gives the White House leverage over this process.
Experts emphasize that Washington’s pressure on Kyiv could create a false impression in the Kremlin that Western resolve is waning. In the short term, restrictions on U.S. technology will cause significant harm, but are unlikely to break the Ukrainians’ will to fight.
Previously, the U.S. had temporarily suspended the sharing of intelligence on ballistic missile launches, but the exchange of information was later resumed.
