"We firmly stand by this position": The EU responds to the idea of a summit between Putin, Trump, and Xi
Any decision regarding the end of the war must respect Ukraine’s territorial integrity. This was the European Commission’s response to Russian dictator Vladimir Putin’s proposal to hold a summit with the leaders of the United States and China.
According to Ukrinform, Brussels has responded to media reports about the Kremlin’s intention to hold a trilateral summit next month. European Commission officials emphasized that the peace process cannot proceed without taking Europe’s position into account.
What Europeans Think
Any solution found for Ukraine must respect its territorial integrity. We firmly adhere to this position,
said European Commission Chief Spokesperson Paula Pinho.
For his part, Foreign Affairs Spokesperson Christian Wiegand confirmed that the European Union is aware of Moscow’s desire to initiate trilateral talks. At the same time, he emphasized the lack of concrete steps toward peace in the Russian leadership’s actions.
“We have, of course, seen reports of Putin’s proposal to discuss this issue with President Trump and Leader Xi. Let’s be perfectly clear: if Putin wants to end this war, he can simply stop it today – and the war will end,”
– says Wiegand.
The spokesperson also noted that the recently announced “energy truce” clearly demonstrated that the Kremlin “shows no signs of a willingness to implement it or move in that direction.”
Wiegand added that in the European Council’s conclusions, leaders clearly defined Europe’s decisive role in the future settlement of the conflict and in protecting its own interests.
Meanwhile, the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that it had no information regarding the preparation of such a meeting of the leaders of China, the United States, and Russia. At the same time, Rubio had previously confirmed that the issue of organizing talks between Donald Trump, Vladimir Putin, and Xi Jinping had indeed been discussed.
As a reminder, the Ukrainian side also expressed a firm stance. Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha emphasized that as long as Vladimir Putin continues his terror against the civilian population of Ukraine, he has no place at the negotiating table with Trump and Xi.
We previously reported that Donald Trump’s envoys also noted the Russian dictator's unwillingness to halt hostilities. Media outlets have pointed to Moscow’s ultimatum-like territorial claims regarding the seizure of the remaining territory of Donbas, which Kyiv categorically opposes.
