After the meeting with Putin: The EU wants to discuss the results of Witkoff's visit with the US
On October 21, U.S. Presidential Special Representative Steve Witkoff was in Russia, where he met with dictator Vladimir Putin. The American envoy may return to Oslo to present the results of his visit.
Washington hopes to pave the way for trilateral or broader multilateral talks, according to Axios, citing its own sources.
Witkoff will return to Norway
One of the sources stated that the White House hopes Russia will show greater willingness to compromise. The recent lifting of U.S. sanctions on Russian diesel fuel exports and a series of related decisions are said to have contributed to this.
Before his visit to Russia, Trump’s representative held talks in the Norwegian capital. There, he met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the leadership of Norway and Finland, as well as diplomats from France, the United Kingdom, Germany, Poland, the EU, and NATO.
NRK notes that after meeting with Putin in St. Petersburg, Witkoff will return to Oslo to continue the talks.
Brussels insists on Europe’s participation in the format
Furthermore, as quoted by “Ukrinform,” European Commission Chief Spokesperson Paola Pinho stated that the EU expects to discuss the results of Witkoff’s visit to Russia with the U.S. upon his return.
She also emphasized the importance of involving European partners in the peace talks.
“In this way, we can directly convey our position to those who are also interested in ending this war,”
Pinho emphasized.
At the same time, it became known that Volodymyr Zelenskyy has already left for Ukraine and did not wait for the American delegation to return from Russia. The Norwegian side will hear the results of Witkoff’s meeting with Putin.
