Zelenskyy called Trump's potential deal "dangerous" for Europe
The President of Ukraine warned of the dangers posed by Donald Trump’s proposed new security system for Europe. The head of state emphasized that Moscow’s attempts to divide the continent are unacceptable.
He compared these agreements to the Yalta Accords. The head of state made these remarks in an interview with CNN correspondent Jake Tapper.
What did the President of Ukraine say?
The head of state said that he does not yet have all the details of U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposal for a new European security system. According to him, any attempts to create a new security architecture without resolving the issue of ending the war pose a direct threat to the European continent.
I don’t see any demonstrations or signals from Russia that it is ready to do anything. I think that’s exactly why it’s dangerous. When they – and I mean Russia – don’t want to talk about how to end this war but want to start with a new security architecture in Europe, that’s dangerous,” Zelenskyy said.
The head of state emphasized that such a turn of events currently poses an even greater threat to European countries than it does directly to Ukraine. The president explained his position by noting that Ukraine is not a member of the European Union or NATO. The politician issued a warning to the entire continent.
“So I’m not speaking on behalf of NATO or the EU, but this is dangerous for all of us. We all live in Europe. We don’t want a ‘Yalta-2.’ We aren’t ready for such an arrangement. We don’t want Russia to divide us,”
– the Ukrainian leader stated.
According to the head of state, the inviolability of borders remains the key condition for preserving the democratic order in the region. He noted that any free and democratic country requires respect for its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Please note! The Yalta Conference took place from February 4 to 11, 1945, between U.S. President Franklin Roosevelt, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, and Soviet leader Joseph Stalin. The Yalta Conference, as well as the subsequent Potsdam Conference, resulted in the division of Europe into two spheres of influence, a division that lasted for over 40 years until the collapse of the Soviet Union.
Stalin disregarded previous agreements, resulting in Central and Eastern Europe falling under Moscow’s control. Puppet communist governments were established in a number of countries.
As a reminder, on Thursday, the head of state outlined the range of weapons What Kyiv Expects from Washington. In addition to the Patriot air defense systems and their missiles, Zelenskyy also mentioned F-16 fighter jets and a stockpile of ammunition.
