Ukraine and the EU will establish a working group to advance anti-corruption reforms

Ukraine and the European Union will establish a joint working group to accelerate progress toward meeting the benchmarks (interim criteria). The parties agreed to focus on reforms in the areas of the rule of law and the fight against corruption.

Marta Kos, the European Commissioner for Enlargement, announced this on the social media platform X on October 16. She discussed further joint actions with Ukrainian Prime Minister Serhiy Koretskyi following the opening of two negotiation clusters.

What is known about this working group

According to Kos, Ukraine is demonstrating one of the highest rates of progress among all candidate countries currently on the path to EU membership.

“We agreed to launch a joint working group to accelerate progress on interim benchmarks and advance key reforms in the areas of the rule of law and the fight against corruption,”
the European Commissioner wrote.

Kos emphasized that success will require unity and commitment from all Ukrainian partners involved

She also noted that the recent adoption by the Verkhovna Rada of amendments to the legislation on education for national minorities served as an example of such coordinated work.

As previously reported, the Council of the European Union this week approved the launch of negotiation clusters for Ukraine “Internal Market” and “Competitiveness and Inclusive Growth.”

As a reminder, four out of six negotiation clusters have already been opened for Ukraine. Meanwhile, Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar stated that Ukraine’s accession to the EU could take between 15 and 20 years.
