Ceasefire
A ceasefire in Ukraine could be the first step toward ending the war, but it must be fair and guarantee security for Ukrainians. In early March 2025, several important events took place regarding a possible ceasefire in Ukraine. On March 11, 2025, negotiations between the delegations of Ukraine and the United States were held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. As a result, Ukraine agreed to a temporary 30-day ceasefire proposed by the United States, with the possibility of extension by mutual consent of the parties.
It will take effect only if Russia agrees to a simultaneous ceasefire. However, Russia has not yet given a clear answer as to whether it agrees to the ceasefire. At the same time, Vladimir Putin said that Russia supports a 30-day ceasefire, but, in his words, "the question is how this period will be used".
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy stressed the critical need for reliable security guarantees to pave the way to a lasting peace, firmly rejecting any concessions on the occupied territories.
The meeting between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump in Anchorage, Alaska, on August 15, 2025, put an end to talk of a ceasefire. There Russia rejected it, and Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov cynically stated that they were supposedly "working on peace, not a ceasefire".
On April 9, 2026, Vladimir Putin announced a supposed Easter truce lasting from 16:00 on April 11 until the end of April 12, 2026. Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Ukraine would respond in kind and that it was possible not to return to strikes after the holidays. Later, the President of Ukraine stated that Russia had continued its assaults.
